Disabled Access Information

General information

The maps of the Memorial show general information for disabled visitors. Guide brochures, which also show disabled facilities, are available from the Information Desk inside the Memorial's main entrance. There is adequate circulation space in the exhibition areas to allow exhibits to be easily viewed from a wheelchair. Rest seats are provided throughout the galleries and grounds.

Brochures in braille and large print are available for purchase or loan from the Information Desk.

Disabled setdown and parking

A disabled setdown area is available near the Memorial's main entrance, adjacent to around twenty marked disabled parking bays. The setdown area and carpark are both sealed and level. Disabled carparking bays are available adjacent to the Memorial's Administration Building for those visiting on official business.

Bus stop

The public and charter bus stop and bus park is alongside the Memorial's Main Building.

Pathways to the disabled entrances

There is easy access on sealed and level pathways from the bus stop and setdown area and carpark to the disabled entrance into the Memorial. The pathway to the Administration Building is sealed and mostly flat but there is a short, slight incline and the ramp into the building is also slightly inclined.

Disabled entrances

The Memorial's main entrance is at the front of the Main Building (see map). Adjacent to the main entrance stairs is a lift for disabled visitors. The main stairs have handrails on both sides. The schools entrance has a gently inclined ramp (1:20).

Staff assistance

Upon request, Memorial staff can provide assistance for disabled visitors. A facilitated tour for hearing and sight impaired visitors can also be arranged by contacting Public Events on (02) 6243 4518.

Wheelchair hire

Manual wheelchairs for elderly and disabled visitors are available for loan, free of charge. These are available from the Information Desk.

Internal access

Stairs and three lifts connect each of the three levels of the main building and the two levels of ANZAC Hall . The stairs are lit and have handrails on both sides. The front edges of the steps are clearly marked with lighting and have nosings of lighted strips, rubber, or non-slip tape. Lift controls can be reached from a wheelchair. Each lift is fitted with an emergency button and an emergency telephone. Except for the ramps (1:20) to access the Theatre, the Colonial Gallery, and the Education Centre , all the floors in the Memorial are flat and level.

Toilets

As shown on the map, there are four wheelchair accessible toilets within the Memorial: two of these are unisex and two are male or female specific. Each has grab-rails to the side and rear of the toilets.

Signs

There are signs throughout the Memorial giving directions, such as to the toilets for the disabled and to lifts. Brochures in braille and large print are available at the Information Desk.

Evacuation

In the event of having to evacuate the Memorial, public address system announcements will be made and audible alarms will sound. Memorial staff will assist all visitors to move out of the Memorial.

Lighting

The lighting levels vary throughout the Memorial. Some exhibits have low level lighting – for reasons of conservation of the objects on display – and other parts of the Memorial, such as the sound and light shows in ANZAC Hall, have bright, flashing lights.

Floor and ground surfaces

The Memorial floor surfaces vary from carpet to polished marble inside and sealed bitumen, flag-stones, and gravel paths outside.

Telephone

A public telephone within reach of visitors in wheelchairs is located in the front foyer area adjacent to the Memorial Shop.

Café

The Outpost café is located outside the Main Building along a concrete path with a gentle incline (1:15) from the Memorial. There is wheelchair access into the café and adequate circulation space inside. Wheelchair users can sit at tables and access the counter and self-service drink cabinets. There is also a wheelchair accessible toilet outside the café.

The Landing Place café is located within ANZAC Hall. There is easy wheelchair access from the gallery. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is adjacent to the café.
