Description

recto: In this study Taylor captures transitory atmospheric effects, while maintaining the focus of the composition on the skaters in the foreground. The fence that runs from the right mid ground into the distance curtails the pictorial space and reminds us that this activity is occurring within the confines of a prisoner of war camp.
Verso: Taylor attempts to balance the composition of this work, whose subject is the bunk beds and domestic space within a camp shed, with the e effect of light illuminating parts of the dark room. This is the first of three, related works held by the AWM and at this stage the composition is unresolved. In the later works Taylor is able to refine his selection of subject matter and resolve the problem of how to represent light falling on the forms and figures in the room (ART28572 and ART28573).
That Taylor judges this image to be of less importance, or of less significance than that of the skaters, is indicated by his reuse of the paper, and his inscription in pencil over the verso image '9 1/4 x 7 Back'.
