Hello Ion LIdriess,
my grandfather was a driver in the 4th Lighthorse Field Ambulance during 1917 to 1919. I am attempting to research his times in the Middle East so I can share this at my daughters school as part of ANZAC DAY.
If you can provide some links or books that could assist me. I have his war records in summary and want to add to it.
I look forward to your reply. 0433519816

Hi Shanielle- Just to let you know I am the grandaughter of the Garnet Aitchison who is the school teacher in the book Back o'er Cairns and the final paragraph of that book says about how they once again met under the shadow of the Turkish Guns before Beersheba. I am trying to document history of my grandfather so my children and grandchildren know about our family history- so naturally these books are mentioned and hopefully one day they will read them

Ion L Idriess in ;'The Desert Column', refers to a prototype rifle rifle designed by himself and produced by him and 'Sarn-major King'; which was trialled at Cairo and sent to England. As a gun collector and militaria enthusiast I am interested in any further information available on this topic.

There was always high demand on Idriess's books in our little high school library at Liverpool, Sydney, in the late 40's. I have a '37 edition of The Desert Column, signed (1938) by Ion to one of his mates in the Desert Column - John Henry Clarke. The book was amongst a collection of stuff in an auction in Coogee (SYD) in about 1990.

The Clarkes were (are?) a Sydney to Hobart yacht racing family.

This copy is in our private library.
