Collection relating to the service of Major Arthur Justin Sanford Hutchinson, 58 Battalion AIF, Egypt, Gallipoli, 1915-1916. Collection includes letters and a postcard sent by Hutchinson to his family in Australia, and a testimonial from Brigade Commander Elliott on Hutchinson's death in action and refers to his recommendation for award of the Victoria Cross.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Major Arthur Justin Sanford Hutchinson, 58 Battalion AIF (formerly 9 Light Horse Regiment), who was killed on 19 July 1916 when leading a charge on the German line during the Battle of Fromelles. Other biographical details concerning him are: Graduate of Duntroon Military College; of Hamilton, Tasmania; born Wodonga, Victoria, 25 August 1894; educated Church Grammar School, Launceston, Tasmania; at Duntroon College from 7 February 1912 to 2 November 1914; appointed Lieutenant in AIF, 3 November 1914 and posted to 9 Light Horse Regiment; 28 October 1915, promoted Captain and appointed machine-gun officer of 3 Light Horse Brigade; 4 February 1916, returned to duty with 8 Light Horse Regiment (?9th); 29 April 1916, taken on the strength of the 58th Battalion during the reorganization of the AIF in Egypt; 30 May 1916, promoted Major.
