Description

Studio portrait of Captain Neville Reginald Howse VC, New South Wales Army Medical Corps in the Boer War uniform and wearing the Victoria Cross (VC) medal and ribbon for the Queen's South Africa medal. On 4 December 1901 he was decorated with his VC at Victoria Barracks, Paddington, NSW. On 24 July 1900 at the height of the fighting near Vredefort, Orange Free State, South Africa, Howse saw a trumpeter fall wounded in the foremost line. Howse galloped out under extremely heavy fire to rescue the man. Howse's horse was shot dead, but he continued on foot to the casualty, treated his wounds and carried him out of the action.
