Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Essington Lowther Zouch, 7th Light Horse Regiment (LHR) from Goulburn, NSW. A 24 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 21 October 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 189) with A Squadron from Sydney on 20 December 1914 aboard HMAT Ayrshire. While serving at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant before being wounded in action on 30 August 1915. After being evacuated to Malta for medical treatment, he recovered from his wounds and returned to the 7th LHR at Gallipoli in October 1915. On 9 November 1915 he was appointed a Second Lieutenant and then promoted to Lieutenant on 28 January 1916. He went on to serve in the Middle East with the 7th LHR and the 2nd Machine Gun Squadron. While serving in Palestine he was Mentioned in Despatches and in the final stages of the Battle for Gaza he was wounded in action on 15 November 1917. Lt Zouch died of his wounds on 17 November 1917 and was buried in the Deir El Belah War Cemetery.
