The Fairground, Sydney
Description
Depicts a fairground scene at night in wartime Sydney, probably at Rushcutters Bay. Soldiers and sailors on leave gather around, striking up conversations with groups of girls, some under the bright lights, others in the dimly lit shadows. The painting shows a brief moment of respite from the rigours of the war and as a depiction of life in Australia during the war of 1939-45. Note the timely amusement ride on the right, consisting of suspended military aeroplanes.
