Smoko time with the AWLA

Women from the Australian Women's Land Army enjoy a tea break, seated on dry grass in rural Queensland in the height of summer. A makeshift tent provides relief from the harsh summer sun, the bleached grass is a stark contrast to the blue sky overhead.

Grace Taylor joined the Australian Women's Land Army (AWLA) in 1942 as a Field Officer responsible for the administration of AWLA workers. She founded an unofficial newsletter for the Land Army Girls, to which she contributed humorous verse, prose and cartoons. She travelled extensively around the Queensland camps, working to improve conditions and facilities for AWLA members.
