Portrait of Colonel (Col) Neville Reginald Howse VC. Colonel Howse served with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) that went to German New Guinea, and was present at the capture of Rabaul in September 1914. He left Australia with the first contingent of the AIF, and later became Assistant Director of Medical Services, 1st Australian Division, then Deputy Director of Medical Services, Anzac Corps. Early in 1916 he became Director of Medical Services, AIF, and attained the rank of Major General. In 1917 he became a Knight Commander of the Bath.
