Description

Army engineers use a detector, where mines are suspected, to clear the way for an armoured personnel carrier (APC). One the left, holding the mine detector is Sapper (Spr) Ross Jelley and with him is Spr Henry Baggaley, both members of 1 Troop, 1 Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers. They are clearing an area south of Baria, where the tanks of 1 Armoured Regiment are going to be off loaded from landing craft when the tanks were first arriving in South Vietnam from Australia. The tanks were off loaded at Vung Tau and then loaded onto landing craft and transported up river to a point south of Baria where they were then unloaded. They then proceeded cross country to the 1st Australian Task Force at Nui Dat. The armoured personnel carriers in the background are there as protection of the area and to escort the tanks back to Nuit Dat.
