Description

Rejoicing broke out spontaneously when the surrender of Japan was announced - the War was over. Left to right, Betty Williams, Lois Anne Martin and possibly Carmel O'Connor, three work mates from the Kodak factory at Abbotsford typified the joy and relief felt by all Australians. Miss Martin knitted the red, white and blue vest especially for VP day and never wore it again. She is also is contributing to the noisy festivities by way of a hand cranked siren and her friends are waving Australian flags. She subsequently married Mr William (Bill) Drew who donated the vest to the Australian War Memorial(AWM) on her death. Betty Williams subsequently married an ex-Serviceman, Mr Les Gibson. They are both now deceased. The photograph, cropped to include only Miss Martin, appeared on the front page of the Melbourne Herald that afternoon.
