Left to right: back row: Sapper (Spr) George Gibson Paterson, a despatch rider; Sergeant William Charles McCutchan. Front row: Dick Ellis, who is smoking a pipe; 36 Spr John Thomas (Jock) Nicholls, who is holding a rifle. Set up inside the tent is a box bearing the trademark or label of Kiwi Boot Polish. Paterson later won an MM and an MC, and McCutchan an MC, DCM and MBE.
