- A young recruit to the Northern Alliance prays with his machine gun resting against his shoulder, with a group of his fellow soldiers, before they go into battle against the Taliban. The area around Jabal Os Saraj was a key strongpoint for the Northern Alliance as they pushed southwards towards Kabul, with the assistance of United States (US) air forces. The US and Australia intervened in Afghanistan's civil war on the side of the Northern Alliance following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.
