- An unidentified soldier of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), rests and reads a book during a break on a long patrol near Bien Hoa, Vietnam. He is leaning back on his portable field radio set as he sits on the ground in a sheltered area of bush. Even though the soldier is resting, his radio would probably still be switched on and ready to receive messages. During the patrol the soldier carries his radio and pack, rifle, personal equipment, food and water. In 1965 1RAR was deployed to the Bien Hoa Province to serve alongside the US 173rd Airborne Brigade. As well as contributing to the security of Bien Hoa airbase, 1RAR conducted a range of operations against Viet Cong forces.
