Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 1586 Private Verner Gladders Knuckey, 8 Light Horse Regiment and 2 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. Collection consists of Knuckley's diary in seven volumes (and transcript). Knuckey's detailed entries cover the period 1916-1919 and describe his service with the Light Horse in Suvla, Sari Bair, Gallipoli 1915, Romani, and Magdhaba-Rafah, Egypt 1915-17. In 1917 Knuckey joined the 2nd Squadron AFC, which formed in Egypt from a nucleus of 1 Sqn AFC and recruitment through the Light Horse. In 1917-1918, Knuckey writes about training in England with the DH5 Scout; his participation in the Battle of Cambrai and attacks on the aerodromes outside of Lille, including Habourdin and Lomme, August 1918. Also included is a roll of honour; enemy aircraft accounted for; and typed extracts from 2 Squadron record book.
