Correspondence and photographs relating to the First World War service of 91 Trooper Edward Randolph Cleaver, 4th Light Horse Regiment. This collection of material includes letters and postcards from Cleaver to his family, photographs of Cleaver, and correspondence from others concerning Cleaver's service. The letters and photographs that Cleaver sent to his family detail his service with 4th Light Horse Regiment and notably mention the Battle of Romani as well as applying for compassionate leave home and the capture of a German aircraft pilot and his aircraft. His last letter is dated 26 October 1917, shortly before his death at the Battle of Beersheba. In addition, Major James Lawson recounts Cleaver's death and provides a detailed description of the Battle of Beersheba. Also included are photographs of the brothers George Walter French (4 Light Horse Regiment) and James Isaac French (8 Light Horse Regiment), and correspondence from their father James to the Cleaver family concerning the memorial cross erected by his son James [see H15570].
