Damaged periscope : The Nek, Gallipoli
Damaged extendable folded thin white metal trench periscope, with a rectangular metal outer case, with a thinner rectangular box inside. The outer case has a thin rectangular slot cut out along one long side. A steel peg attached to the inner box through the slot allows the periscope to be extended or retracted. There is a bullet hole at the top of the inner box.
Damaged periscope found on 17 February 1919 in Australian trenches near the Nek by the Australian Historical Mission (AHM). The Mission, led by Official Historian C E W Bean, visited Gallipoli in February and March 1919 to collect items for the nation, to record the area through artworks and photographs, and to explore the battlefields to answer some of the 'riddles of Anzac' for the future Australian official history of the war.
