Description Portrait of 2183 Private (Pte) Joseph Wood, 29th Battalion. A bottle blower from Caufield, Vic, Pte Wood was wounded in action on 11 December 1917, suffering a severe wound to his right thigh. He was sent to hospital in England, where, nearly a year later, his leg was amputated after several failed attempts to save it from infection. After recovering in England, Pte Wood arrived home in Australia in October 1919. (See also DA13772)
