The symposium began a series of commemorative events which also served as a reunion for the veterans and their families. The Battle of Binh Ba was fought from 6 to 8 June 1969. It involved the Australian Task Force’s ready reaction force of infantry soldiers, armoured personnel carriers and Centurion tanks. Intense and difficult house-to-house fighting between the Australians and forces of the North Vietnamese army and Viet Cong caused the destruction of much of the village of Binh Ba. Enemy losses were heavy; over 100 were estimated killed and nine taken prisoner. One Australian soldier, Private Wayne Teeling, was killed and 11 were wounded.
