Australian official war artists scheme

Although many artists have been commissioned by various public and private agencies to produce works of art on the theme of war, not all of these artists are official war artists.

The term "official war artist", as it has been defined by the Australian War Memorial, is used to describe artists who have been specifically employed by either the Australian War Memorial or the Army Military History Section (or its antecedents) to create works of art for the Memorial's collection. It does not include artists who have received commissions for specific works of art for the Memorial's collection, e.g., portrait commissions.

Official war artists were employed during the First World War, Second World War, Korean and Vietnam wars. As one would expect the terms and conditions under which artists were employed has varied considerably over this time, and even within the same wars artists were employed under different terms and conditions.
