Front: faces of Australia at war features portraits from the Australian
War Memorial's extensive art collection, and includes works by Australian
artists Tom Roberts, George Lambert, William Dobell, Albert Tucker,
Nora Heysen and Donald Friend.
Developed jointly by the Australian War Memorial and the Natioanl Portrait Gallery, the exhibition explores the unique relationship between portraiture and war from colonial times to the present, with an emphasis on the two world wars. It displays more than 70 works of art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, sketchbooks, and also incorporates items from popular culture that feature portraits, such as lockets, badges, packs of cards and posters.
