Le masque
painted in Paris, c. 1930
oil on wood panel 35 x 26.8 cm
signed l.r., incised “STELLA/BOWEN”, not dated
private collection
The mask Sitwell is holding was brought back from Africa by one of Bowen’s friends, the writer Willy Seabrook:
I painted Edith’s extravagant hands with their huge Victorian ornaments holding the African mask . . . I painted various interiors, which always turned out to be pictures of windows. I loved painting windows and I loved painting hands.
The mask itself is also on display.
