Australian War Memorial wins third national tourism award

The Memorial's Director, Steve Gower, receiving the award

The Australian War Memorial has won its third consecutive national tourism award in the category of Major Tourist Attraction. Never before in the history of the awards has an attraction received this level of recognition of excellence.

“This is a great achievement for everyone associated with the Memorial. I am delighted the work of our talented staff has been recognised in this manner,” said Steve Gower, Director of the Memorial.

The Memorial was competing against Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne, The Perth Mint, Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Kangaroo Island in South Australian and Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo in Queensland for the honour of Major Tourist Attraction Winner.

Judging took place against criteria such as visitor satisfaction, marketing, education, training and contributions to the tourism sector. The award confirms the Australian War Memorial’s position as one of Australia’s leading cultural institutions and its uniqueness in the world.

“This award is a significant achievement for Canberra tourism and will undoubtedly increase tourist interest in all the national institutions in Canberra,” says Steve Gower, “Canberra is unique in having this collection of outstanding attractions”
