Boer War Nominal Roll Introduction
The Boer War Nominal Roll lists the details of personnel who served with Australian units in the Boer War, 1899-1902 (also known as the Anglo-Boer War or the South African War).
Background
The Boer War Nominal Roll was initially compiled and edited by Dr Robin McLachlan (Senior Lecturer in History at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst NSW) while an Australian War Memorial Research Centre Fellow from 1986 to 1988. The source used was Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa, compiled and edited for the Department of Defence by Lieutenant-Colonel P. L. Murray RAA (Ret.). The Boer War Nominal Roll has since been enhanced by staff of the Memorial's Research Centre with the addition of fields for rank, full first name, service number, fate (for those who died), and notes from Murray and other sources of information.
Content
The Boer War Nominal Roll contains, in the most part, only the names of those who served in Australian units. The names of Australians who served in other Empire units are generally not included, a notable exception being recruits of the Scottish Horse.
Where a date of death provided in this nominal roll varies from that given in the Roll of Honour, the latter information is to be preferred as more authoritative. This is because checking and verification procedures have been carried out on the Roll of Honour records.
Search tip
For many names, searching by surname is the most effective search. If this approach produces too long a list of names, try searching using the person’s first name and surname e.g. Alfred Jones.
Further information
