Access to the collections

Personal visit

Visitors to the Research Centre are able to use the collections and a range of research facilities and services.

The reference library, the core film collection, the Keith Murdoch Sound Archive, microform resources, and access to the Memorial's databases are available in the reading room. In order to retrieve other items from the holdings, researchers need only complete a request slip for each item they wish to see. Staff will retrieve the item and bring it to the researcher's desk.

If you plan to visit the Research Centre to carry out extensive research, it is advisable to give the Research Centre staff advance notice of your visit and area of interest. See Planning a Visit to the Research Centre for further information on preparation. Material requested may sometimes be unavailable for conservation or other reasons.

Remote access

The Research Centre provides a letter, fax, telephone, and email reference service, as well as a referral service to other archival and related institutions such as libraries and the National Archives of Australia. The Research Centre's holdings of books may be accessed through local libraries via Libraries Australia. Official records may be researched through RecordSearch and our own publication, A chronological guide to official records in the Australian War Memorial's collections, which is available online. You can search for Private Records using the Collection Search database and view descriptions of the collections. The Private Records collection is also listed in the RAAM database (Register of Australian Archives and Manuscripts) at the National Library of Australia's web site.
