Britain

M. J. Crook, The evolution of the Victoria Cross: a study in administrative history (Tunbridge Wells: Midas Books, 1975). [Traces the development of rules and warrants and discusses some individual cases.]

H. Taprell Dorling, Ribbons and medals, edited and revised by Alec A. Purves, (London : Osprey, 1983). [Easy to use reference, arranged by country with line illustrations of each medal and coloured plates of ribbons]

Donald Hall, British orders, decorations and medals (St Ives, Huntingdon: Photo Precision, 1973). [Includes campaign medals, coloured illustrations of virtually all orders and decorations.]

The illustrated handbook of the Victoria Cross and George Cross (London: Imperial War Museum, 1970). [An outline of the history of the Victoria Cross with statistical information and many illustrations.]

John Laffin, British campaign medals (London: Abelard-Schuman,1965). [Includes conflicts up to the Korean War with description of medals and terms of award.]

Dennis Pillinger and Anthony Staunton, Victoria Cross presentations and locations (Maidenhead, Berkshire/Woden, ACT: the authors, 2000). [Presentation information includes date, place and presenter for each award. The location guide indicates holding institution for each medal and indicates where a medal is not publicly held. Also lists medals by country, service and regiment held by public bodies, addresses of the public institutions, other lists include public sales.]

New Zealand

Geoffrey P. Oldham, and Brett Delahunt, Orders, decorations and medals awarded to New Zealanders: an illustrated guide for collectors (Auckland, NZ: G.P. Oldham, 1991). [Illustrations, some coloured, including campaign, Coronation and Jubilee medals, long service, and foreign awards, order of precedence, statistics and bibliography.]

USA

Vietnam

Edward J. Emering, Orders, decorations and badges of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the National Front for the Liberation for the Liberation of South Vietnam (Atglen, PA: Schiffer,1997). [Comprises 32 medals which were the current official version of the SRV's award system.]
