Search help

Wildcard

The wildcard character is * and allows a fuzzy search. Example: anz* will return anzac, anzacs, anzus.

The wilcard search is useful for incomplete ID number searches. Example: REL25142*

Phrase searches

Put the phrase in quotes to search for the entire phrase, rather than keywords. Example "ANZAC Day".

Be cautious when searching for people's names in this way, as they could be recorded as either "Albert Jacka" or "Jacka, Albert".

Conflicts and collections

The search tool allows searches to be limited by conflict or time period and collection (advanced search only).

There are nine collection areas:

  • Art (drawing, painting, sculpture, cartoons, dioramas etc)
  • Film
  • Military Heraldry and Technology (uniforms, medals, colour patches, weapons, aircraft, vehicles, equipment etc)
  • Manuscripts (diaries, letters, leaflets, maps etc)
  • Photographs (including digital images)
  • Private Records (drawings, greeting cards, diaries etc)
  • Published collection (postcards, stamps, books etc)
  • Sound recordings (including oral histories and interviews)

At this time the collection search tool excludes:

Advanced Search

The advanced search tool allows greater control over the search query.

Linking to items

A permanent, bookmarkable URL (permalink) is available for each collection record.

The permalink is displayed in the search results and at the base of each item screen. It is also the actual URL in use for each item and is displayed in the brower's address bar when viewing an item.
