The Fighting Fourth
The 4th Battalion was raised in Sydney by Lieutenant-Colonel Onslow Thompson. On 25 April 1915, the Battalion landed at Anzac Cove, and in August fought in the costly struggle to capture the Turkish trenches at Lone Pine. Following the evacuation in December 1915, the unit returned to Egypt, and in April 1916 landed in France. They fought in the battles at Pozieres, Mouquet Farm and Bullecourt. In late 1917, they were involved in the struggle in Flanders which culminated in the capture of Passchendaele. This book by Ron Austin provides a fascinating and often poignant insight into the war through the use of letters and diaries obtained from families whose relatives fought in that war. These personal excerpts bring home the human cost and futility of that war, particularly as the 4th's fatal casualties totalled 1,287 men. Includes Honour roll, Nominal roll and, Honours & Awards. Hard cover, illustrated, 256 pages.
