Cruiser: The Life and Loss of HMAS Perth and her Crew
In three tumultuous years HMAS Perth battled the forces of Germany, Italy, the Vichy French, and the Japanese Imperial Navy. After the fall of Singapore in 1942, she and her crew were hurled into the campaign to stem the Japanese advance towards Australia. In March that year, she met an overwhelming enemy naval force off the coast of Java and was sunk with the loss of 353 of her crew. Another 324 were taken into captivity, most to become slave labour on the infamous Burma-Siam Railway. Journalist and broadcaster Mike Carlton tells the dramatic and tragic story of HMAS Perth and her gallant crew, and of those who waited at home for their loved ones. Soft cover, photographs, 706 pages.
