The Hall of Valour

Victoria Cross for Australia awarded to Trooper Mark Donaldson
In recent years the Australian War Memorial has refurbished over 70 per cent of its galleries to world-class standards. It now plans to redevelop the Hall of Valour, which houses the Memorial’s outstanding collection of Victoria Crosses and George Crosses awarded to Australians. The most recent addition to this collection is the Victoria Cross for Australia awarded to Trooper Mark Donaldson, SAS, in February 2009.
Renowned Australian architect Richard Johnson (Johnson Pilton Walker, Sydney) has developed a design concept for the Hall of Valour in consultation with the Memorial. The Victoria Cross and George Cross collections will be displayed in a manner that places emphasis on the individual recipients, the actions that resulted in each award, and the locations where these occurred. In proudly telling these stories, the new gallery will form a lasting tribute to the courage and gallantry shown by these Australians.
The “look and feel” of the new gallery will reflect the significance of these awards. The materials to be used – for example, marble and travertine stone – are noted for their traditional noble qualities, and the atmosphere will be further enhanced by state-of-the-art lighting techniques. The medals will be housed in a secure environment, guaranteed by sophisticated alarm systems and CCTV.
