Discover the stories of our nation. The Australian War Memorial’s collection is full of treasured objects that explore the stories that tell us what it is to be an Australian. These show us the faces behind the fighting and help us to understand the experience of Australians in war.
We have chosen just a few objects to showcase the diversity of the collection. You will find these 12 treasures throughout the Memorial’s galleries. Each will have a signpost outlining the object’s story.
Your task is simple: find the treasures, answer the questions, fill in your details and put your entry form in the barrel. Helpful tip: our friendly Memorial staff will gladly assist you in finding the treasures.
From ANZAC to Waterloo any beyond
Orientation Gallery Sir William Birdwood, who had commanded the ANZACs, wore a handsome
uniform as colonel of The Royal Horse Guards.

First World War Gallery The most famous flyer of the war, Manfred von Richthofen, was
shot down over the Australian lines in 1918.

ANZAC Hall The Avro Lancaster bomber that flew almost 90 operations over Germany and occupied Europe is one of the Memorial’s most remarkable objects.


The field marshal’s baton of Sir Thomas Blamey
Second World War Gallery Thomas Blamey, who had been Commander-in-Chief, Australian Military Forces, during the Second World War, became the only Australian to hold the rank of field marshal.


Poignant reminder of a family’s tragedy
Second World War Gallery A gift toy received by a small child from her father shortly after the announcement that he had been killed in action in 1941.
