Enlisted in the AIF on 12 September 1914. Awarded the Military Medal on 16 November 1916 whilst serving as a sergeant in 5 Battery, 3 Field Artillery Brigade. Promoted second lieutenant. Discharged on 16 March 1917 and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps at the same rank. Awarded the Military Cross on 4 March 1918. Served in the RAF. Wing Commander commanding RAAF Base 'Pearce', Western Australia, in 1939. Commanded RAAF units in the Far East 1940-1941. Air Officer Commanding (AOC) 1 Training Group 1941-1942. Promoted to air commodore and was AOC Western Area 1943-1945. Appointed CBE on 1 January 1945. Placed in command of 11 Group, Morotai, on 30 July 1945.
