Senussi

The Senussi were a political-religious organisation centred in Libya and Sudan, but originally founded in Mecca in 1837 by Muhammad bin Ali al-Senussi (1791-1859). The Senussi unsuccessfully fought French expansion in the Sahara between 1902 and 1913. They began a guerilla war against the British Army during the First World War, threatening the Nile Delta. The Senussi were only subdued after a prolonged campaign, which was not marked by any major battles, but which was a major strain on the resources of the British Army stationed in Egypt.
