The 1st Division was formed in Australia in August 1914. The Division was originally to be trained in Britain, before moving to the front line in France, but a lack of suitable accommodation there caused it to be diverted to Egypt. On 25 April 1915, the 1st Division landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. After being withdrawn from Gallipoli in December, the division returned to Egypt. It sailed for France in March 1916 and served in France and Flanders until the Armistice.
