Virtual Tour of the Memorial
Orientation Gallery
The Orientation Gallery introduces the Australian War Memorial and helps people plan their visit. In this gallery you will find displays that illustrate the variety of "records of war" and the ways in which the Memorial's diverse holdings can tell the story of Australia's involvement in international conflicts since 1885. The relics displayed include a box of Gallipoli sand, blood red poppies, nurses' and soldiers' uniforms, handmade dolls and other poignant memorabilia.

Gallipoli Boat, HMT Ascot
The highlight of this gallery is a bullet-riddled Gallipoli lifeboat which transported Australians ashore on 25 April 1915. This boat was abandoned on the beach after being damaged during the eight-month-long campaign that followed the landing. It was recovered in 1919 by an expedition to Gallipoli, led by the Australian official historian, Charles Bean, who had earlier been present at the landing in his role as official war correspondent.
