Virtual tour of the Memorial
Hall of Valour
The Hall of Valour honours those Australians who have received the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in time of war. Ninety-six Australians have been awarded the Imperial Victoria Cross, and one has been awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia.
Amid great battles and the movements of armies, the exploits of courageous individuals have always provided inspiration. The Hall of Valour recognises the deeds of ordinary Australians under the extraordinary conditions of war.
Victoria Crosses at the Memorial
The Memorial’s collection consists of three Victoria Crosses from the Boer War, 42 from the First World War, 13 from
the Second World War, two from the Vietnam War, and two British medals. A total of sixty Victoria Crosses are on display in the Hall
of Valour (58 Australian and 2 British). Trooper Donaldson's Victoria Cross is on display in the Conflicts 1945 to today galleries at the Australian War Memorial. This is the largest publicly accessible collection of Victoria Crosses in the world.
For more information on the Victoria Cross and on the Australians who have received the award, see the classic reference work, They dared mightily by Lionel Wigmore in collaboration with Bruce Harding (revised and condensed by Jeff Williams and Anthony Staunton, 1986). An updated edition, Victoria Cross: Australia’s finest and the battles they fought by Anthony Staunton was published in 2005.
