The Orientation Gallery introduces visitors to the museum. It gives a foretaste of the many personal stories in the galleries that cover all conflicts in which Australian servicemen and women have been involved.

The glass wall

The idea for the glass wall as inspired by the Hall of Memory mosaic. The section behind the boat has been created from the same type of tessarae (Italian enamelled glass tiles) as those used in the Hall of Memory in the 1950s. Use of this material suggests a subtle connection between the Commemorative area and the exhibitions.
The exhibition in the Orientation Gallery is intended to offer impressions of the intensity of the war experience and the emotional impact of a wide variety of collection items. This grouping of personal effects was chosen to emphasise the personal side of war. They symbolise the range and intensity of the experiences of Australian servicemen and women. The clothing, weapons, kit and other personal belongings were carried in all services, and all major conflicts are covered in this selection.
