The interior of the Hall of Memory
Stepping into the Hall of Memory often brings a rush of amazement at the sudden sense of soaring height and space, and the rich, glowing colours. This is a quiet, solemn and awe-inspiring space.
The Tomb of the Unknown Australian Solider is in the centre of the Hall: he represents all Australians who have given their lives during wartime.
The four pillars behind the tomb represent the four ancient elements: earth, air, fire and water. They represent the all the landscapes and climates where Australians have served and died.
The walls are covered with one of the world's largest mosaics, comprising over six million enamelled glass tiles. The figures of the soldier, sailor, airman, and servicewoman recall the Australian experience of the Second World War. Fifteen stained-glass windows each represent a defining quality of Australian servicemen and women at war.
In the dome is a mosaic depicting the souls of the dead rising from the earth towards their spiritual home, represented by a glowing sun within the Southern Cross.
