Roll of Honour soundscape
Soundscape enhances the iconic Roll of Honour in the Memorial’s Commemorative Area, while remaining a respectful and solemn experience for visitors.
The project initially began with groups of primary school students from across Australia recording the names and ages of some of the 62,000 Australians who died in service during the First World War.
ABC Local played a key role in collecting these initial 6,500 recordings through a countrywide call for schools to participate in the project.
The recordings are currently playing in the Memorial’s First World War cloisters. It is the Memorial’s goal to collect recordings of all 62,000 names that appear on the First World War Roll of Honour.
The Memorial and Google Australia have now developed an online recording application, Remember me, which will allow all primary schools to participate in the project from their classrooms.
If you would like stay up to date or participate in this project, please fill in our Centenary projects webform.
Remember Me tutorial video
Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, and Abbey-Jane Bergan, School Captain at Mount Pritchard Public School introduce the Remember Me app.
What is Remember me?
Remember me is an initiative led by the Australian War Memorial which aims to capture voice recordings of children from around Australia as they read the names of those servicemen and servicewomen who appear on the First World War Roll of Honour.
What age should the children be who make voice recordings using Remember me?
Primary school students between the ages of ten and 12 are invited to record the names and ages of some of the 62,000 Australians who died during the First World War.
Can a child make more than one recording?
While the aim is for as many children from across Australia as possible to participate in this initiative, children are able to make more than one recording should they wish to do so.
Where will the recordings be used?
The recordings will feature in an audio soundscape in the First World War Roll of Honour cloisters in the Commemorative Area of the Australian War Memorial. The soundscape will be played throughout the four years of the centenary of the First World War.
Is it possible to search in Remember me for a name to record?
Yes. Remember me can be used to search for any name that appears on the First World War Roll of Honour.
How can I access Remember me?
Schools can register to use the Remember me web application on the Australian War Memorial’s website at the Roll of Honour Soundscape web page. The application is supported on most android devices and desktops through Google Chrome.
