Australian and New Zealand patients
Description
Australian and New Zealand patients wait to board the hospital ship Oranje at Port Tewfik. The Oranje was a modern 20,000 ton vessel owned by the Netherlands government. In 1941 the ship was offered, fully equipped and manned, to the Royal Australian Navy for use by Australia and New Zealand as a hospital ship. Once refitted as 1 Netherlands Military Hospital Ship, the Oranje carried more than 32,000 sick and wounded Allied patients on over 40 voyages.
