Official Opening of Anzac Hall and the Atrium

Last week, the Australian War Memorial welcomed guests to the official opening of the new Anzac Hall, with the Prime Minister and Governor-General joining the occasion to mark this significant milestone.

Anzac Hall represents the culmination of years of planning and collaboration, creating greater capacity to share the stories of Australian service through engaging, immersive and deeply personal experiences.

What a sublime and powerful addition it is. A bold vision turned into a reality that enhances the institution of which it is now part.

It amounts to an act of profound respect from the nation to all who have served in our name, and all who serve now.

Visitors can explore new exhibitions that highlight more recent conflicts, alongside familiar stories seen from fresh perspectives — including the iconic G for George. 

For the first time, the experiences of Australians in Afghanistan and on peacekeeping missions will be told with the depth, clarity and respect they warrant, Australian War Memorial Director Matt Anderson said.

These exceptional new galleries represent a mosaic of memory – of art and artefacts, and remarkable, deeply moving storytelling done in remarkably modern ways, always presented with context and candour.

Designed to sit alongside the original heritage building, Anzac Hall honours the past while making space for new voices and experiences. It continues the Memorial’s role as a place to remember, to learn, and to deepen understanding of service and sacrifice.

As the doors open, the purpose remains clear: to share these stories in a way people can connect with — now and into the future.
