This honour was awarded for participation in the offensive engagement along the Qattara Track, on Miteiriya “Ruin” Ridge, south of Tel el Eisa, Egypt. This was the final assault on Ruin Ridge and, although it was captured, the 2/28th Infantry Battalion was unable to hold the ridge when attacked by German armoured units. The Australians suffered heavy casualties and most of the battalion was captured, becoming prisoners of war.
