SYRIA. IMMEDIATELY UPON THE CAPTURE OF SIDON BY THE BRITISH FORCES IT WAS DECLARED AN OPEN TOWN AND A PROCLAMATION WAS ISSUED POINTING OUT THAT THE BRITISH HAD NO INTENTION OF USING THE TOWN FOR ANY MILITARY PURPOSE. THIS SAVED THE ANCIENT CITY FROM DAMAGE.
