NEW GUINEA. KOKODA. AN AUSTRALIAN OFFICER IN CHARGE OF THE NATIVES BUYS FRUIT FROM NATIVES IN A VILLAGE THAT HAS JUST BEEN TAKEN FROM THE JAPANESE. PAYMENT IS MADE ON THE BARTER PRINCIPLE PAYMENT ALSO MADE IN TRADE TOBACCO. FOOD, USUALLY PLENTIFUL IN THIS AREA, IS NOW SCARCE, AS THE RETREATING JAPANESE BURNED DOWN MANY OF THE NATIVE GARDENS.
