Description
Derna, Libya. 1941-01. Artillery flash spotters of the 2/1st Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. Flash spotting was a technique where artillery volunteers moved forward at night to spot the flashes of enemy guns, take bearings and the time between recording flash and the sound of the gun. With two parties operating from different positions enemy batteries could be pin pointed and accurate fire brought to bear on them. In the back row, from the left, are Gunners McGregor, C. Lind, M. Hamilton, A. Goyen and D. Wilson. Front row, without hat is Sergeant J. Sachs.
