Description
The pigeon, a Blue Cheq Cock, No 879:D/D:43:Q, donated to the Army by Mr A J Flavell, was allotted to 1 Australian Pigeon Section, attached US Forces, Manus Island, Admiralty Islands. While operating with 'G' Brewer Task Force in the Drabito area on 5 April 1944, the pigeon was used to carry information to HQ Brewer Task Force, a distance of 25-30 miles which it flew in 47 minutes. Despite being fired upon by the Japanese, valuable information about the disposition of their forces was received, and Drabito was bombed with success. The bird was awarded the Dickin Medal.
