Description
Western Desert. November 1942. Shortly after the Battle of El Alamein during which an AIF unit performed magnificently against the advancing Axis forces, a Commemoration service was held by Salvation Army Commissioner Tibbs. He gave a talk that has become famous in the desert as the "Sermon in the Sandhills". His sermon was preached within the sound of guns and in a sunken valley protected from enemy aircraft by anti-aircraft posts mounted on the surrounding heights. In the foreground is a Bren gun mounted on a tripod for protection against aircraft and two observers watching for enemy activity.
