New Guinea. October 1942. US General (Gen) Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander, South West Pacific Area, lights a cigar during an inspection tour of forward areas. With him in the jeep are Australians Brigadier Charles Spry; Major General G. S. Allen, Commander, 7th Division AIF; and Lieutenant General Edmund Herring (partially hidden by the jeep driver). In the jeep behind is Australian General Sir Thomas Blamey with other staff officers. This was Gen MacArthur's first visit to New Guinea.
