New Guinea. October 1942. US General (Gen) Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander, South West Pacific Area (smoking cigar), with Australian and American senior officers trudge through a recent battle area. On his immediate left is Australian Lieutenant General Edmund Herring (slouch hat), on his immediate right is Australian Major General G. S. Allen, Commander, 7th Division AIF. In a solar topee is Australian Minister for the Army Mr F. M. Forde and leading the group is Australian Brigadier Charles Spry. This was Gen MacArthur's first visit to New Guinea.
