Adams, William Affleck (Major, b.1869 - d.1917)
Description
Collection of letters (photocopies) relating to service of Major William Affleck Adams, DSO 3 Pioneer Battalion, France, 1916-1917. Letters written to Adams' wife and children describe training in England and action in France. Adams comments on service life; mail services and clothing and food supplies. In the letters Adams reflects on changes and conflicts within the battalion command. Letters also report on military actions within France in which the battalion participated. Letters contain endearments to wife and children. Letter to wife, 12 November 1916 cautions against son enlisting. Included in the collection are several condolence letters relating to Adams' death in the third battle at Ypres on 15 October 1917. Photocopies made 1927. Location of originals unknown. Letters not in chronological order and some letters incomplete.
